MIAC

The National Aerospace Blueprint was launched in 1997 and it aims for the country of Malaysia to transform into an aerospace nation by the year 2015. In line with this, the government was also interested to turn the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, or Subang Airport, Subang to be an aerospace centre.

The former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has announced the plan as early as 1998 and the project is known as the Malaysia Internation Aerospace Centre. The project hoewever, was only officially launched in 2005 by our then Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after getting approval from the Cabinet. Two government-backed agencies, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and Malaysia Industry-Government for High Technology (MIGHT) – were appointed to manage the development. These two, especially MAHB would function as manager for the development and facilitator to the industry players in establishing their business in MIAC.

For the whole, the development site covers 1,200 acres around the Subang Airport are which roughly equals 65% of the airport's runway and taxiways while leaving 400 acres for buildings such as hangars, offices and many other facilities.

The activities in the area would cover six areas, namely:
1) Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO)
2) Helicopter centre
3) Aerospace training centre
4) Aerospace technology centre
5) General Aviation centre
6) Commercial support facilities

In pursuing its mission for 2015, the country also hopes that by that year it has captured around 5% of the global MRO market, and position itself to capture substantial aerospace work packages for the next generation aircraft programs. MIAC as mentioned has an MRO activity area and this will be facilitated in terms of its growth by the existence and location of another MRO company, of the leading company in aero-structure manufacturer in the world, Spirit Aerosystems. Its location, which was established there in 2009, helps the MIAC project by serving as an Asia Pacific industrial hub

Among the company that will be part of the helicopter centre in the MIAC is Eurocopter. Their operations in the area will start on April of 2012. The new centre will take delivery of an EC226/EC725 full flight simulator, which is due to be installed by the middle of 2012. Minister of Transport YB Dato' Seri Kong Cho Ha, during the announcement at the2011 Paris Air Show, has hailed the new centre as a strategic development in Malaysia's aviation sector, noting that "the Helicopter Centre concept can become the reference in management of rotary wing operations for the region in future."
