Israeli attack in Syria: Will it escalate?

By: Iliyas Ismail

Israel has in the past five days launched three attacks on Syrian soil. The first one was on Friday, when they attacked a said convoy of military transporting Russian Yakhont and Iranian Fateh missiles to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel has maintained that it will not tolerate any arms shipment to Hezbollah from Syria that would contribute to its military stockpiling. Syria responded by launching anti-aircraft missiles, namely the SA-5 missiles but missing their targets.

Yesterday an Israeli drone launched another attack near the Golan border killing a Hezbollah army commander. With things going on, will it actually escalate further?

With recent regime gains in Syria against the rebels, the Assad regime seems more confident in retaliating to Israeli attacks, this is different from before when Israel strikes have had little respond from Syria. The launch of the four SA-5 missiles might just be a natural respond, but it is actually in the best interest of Syria to be more forceful in its response. Any major response from Syria could be met with more aerial attacks by Israel and this could actually somewhat unite the rebels in launching rockets towards Israel instead.

Syria should not let this slide and any further attacks by Israel must be met with stern warning and action. The latest attack was on some reported military sites and army convoy near the border. Although both this and the drone attack met with no response from Syria compared to Friday's retaliation, it is only a matter of time before Israel would gets what it is asking for, a Hezbollah-Syrian front.
