Fauda series - Review and thoughts
Recently I just finished watching the hit-series Fauda, an Israeli thriller drama showcasing the story of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Two seasons finished! And was it an epic drama.

Superb acting, great storyline! It really shows that the film makers have done quite a lot of research in putting together this story. Although created by Israelis, the script and mannerisms of Palestinian Muslims are captured quite accurately in the film, including their religious rituals.
The story showcases a team of undercover Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) units called Mista'arvim, who specializes in undercover operations among Palestinian society engaging in counter-terrorism. They are trained to assimilate and blend well within the Arab population, speaking Arabic and are deeply familiar with their Palestinian society.
Season 1 shows how Mista'arvim tries to hunt and capture Abu Ahmad, a senior Hamas militant. Mista'arvim disguises themselves as Palestinians regularly to try to catch Abu Ahmad and kills many people along the way. The unit were involved in several conflicts among themselves in determining how to go about after Abu Ahmad successfully evades capture, even managing to kidnap one member of the IDF. In the end, Abu Ahmad was killed by his own deputy after Abu Ahmad was deemed to dangerous even to Hamas.
Season 2 continues with the IDF unit hunting down another Palestinian militant called al-Maqdisi, who apparently was able to penetrate Israel disguising as a Jew to launch a major attack. In the end, the IDF manage to trace and kill al-Maqdisi.
What I learnt from the series:
1) Put meticulous planning in your work and work out every detail from the start. This is evident from how the Israelis do their work, especially their security forces, who spends a great deal of their time in monitoring and following closely their targeted Palestinians lives. They have great intel on their enemies, including from collaborators on the ground.
2) Get the job done quickly. The IDF strategy of using undercover spies to move in and out of Palestinian areas quickly is amazing. Although their tactics are rough, such as kidnapping suspects, but they are so quick and precise that it is interesting to learn from.
3) Do not trust people easily. I mean really. The story involves a lot of spies, and there are many twists that shows how detrimental it is to leak confidential information to the other. There was an interesting scene where a Hamas operative, Walid al-Abed was in prison and the IDF is trying to obtain crucial information from him. They even put another IDF personnel to stay in the same room with Walid, pretending to be another fellow Palestinian captive, trying to make Walid share vital information. Walid secretly figure out the IDF's plan and plays along, not giving any details to the "captive", wasting his time before finally being beaten by the IDF soldier.

Walid al-Abed
4) Many members of the IDF are ruthless and employs whatever means necessary to achieve their goals.
Season three will be available on Netflix sometime in February next year and will feature the IDF team's operations in Gaza.
