Hong Kong protests
I just hope it will end soon. But the recent standoff between university students and police is really regrettable and an unfortunate situation. International students are forced to go back to their respective countries due to the worsening situation making it impossible to focus on their studies.
I watched a recent news report where Australian students had to go back to Australia until the situation gets better, and if they still choose to stay for their studies, the government will not help them if anything bad happens. University students can be more expressive and aggressive in their protests, but please do consider that this is not helping other students and it certainly is not helping Hong Kong as a whole. Many parts of the country is paralyzed and we wonder how will this play out in the end.
The year 2047 will be the year when the "one system, two country" principle will expire and a possible downgrading of Hong Kong's autonomous status will occur and China will expand its control and influence into the nation. Whatever may happen exactly during that year, many are worried that before it occurs, China is already trying to expand its influence by the initial introduction of the extradition bill that sparked this round of protests.
Nationalism in Hong Kong and anti-China sentiment is quite strong especially among the younger generation. This is evident in the study by University of Hong Kong stating that 71% of Hong Kongers are not proud of being "Chinese" citizens (source). I am not sure what China could do to change this situation, apart from having to change many of its policies deemed totalitarian and oppressive such as the quelling of freedom of speech especially in social media, and also to bridge the gap between the perceived social and cultural differences between the two people.
The China government needs to connect and address various concerns by the Hong Kong population especially the young, before it could ever hope to connect these two entities in a peaceful manner.
