The Disaster Artist & The Room

Much has been said about the movie the Room and how much of a train-wreck it is. In the last couple of days, I have been spending my time mostly watching videos on Youtube of interviews and Q&As of The Room and The Disaster Artist, the movie that was based on a book of the same name that was made to tell the story behind the production of The Room. I was just fascinated by the Disaster Artist and really wanted to watch it, but not only that it does not premiere in my country, Malaysia, I also couldn't find it anywhere online for free viewing.

I first came across the Room, I would say it was around 2011. If you've heard of Hitler Rant Parodies, then you know how it was such an addictive series of videos to watch, where they parodied scenes from the movie Downfall. One such video made fun of the Room, and from there I looked for other related videos and came across Doug's (The Movie Critic) video reviewing The Room and I sort of became more interested to watch this movie. It was just a horribly made movie with terrible acting as we all have become very much aware of, but it was watchable. We don't have any screenings here in Malaysia, but I would very much like to go to one.

Later I heard that Greg was releasing a book about this movie, and I was fascinated. I've since searched for the book but apparently it's not as easy to find it here. Two days ago, I found out that a person had uploaded the audio version of the book on archive.com, and I've spent many hours listening and enjoying it, though before that I've already heard snippets of the audio book on youtube. From what I can gather, Greg is self-aware of how ridiculous a character Tommy is, but has come to accept him for who he is and has pity on him. On the first get go, although he could foresee that the Room would not be a success, he just went along with what Tommy said and saw Tommy as someone who kind of know what he's doing to get what he wants.

The outcome and "success" of the movie was not anticipated, and Greg throughout the years, has witnessed how Tommy salvaged his pride and try to pick up the pieces from his shattered dream of making a believable tragedy drama and how he changed the story of his intentions when people start to ridicule his film. Because it was so bad, people enjoyed the film and Tommy just went along and kind of rode on the bandwagon of success. Greg often is seen trying to contain his laughter, when Tommy responds to normal and usual questions such as "Why the spoons in the picture frames", or "Why throw football 3 feet away?" with seemingly deep and analytical answers, as though that was his intention from early on, whereas the simple answer was either they were stock photos or Tommy has a simple minded mentality on how to portray American culture.

You can say that I am very much a fan of the Room by now, and I would really love to get my hands on a copy of Greg's book, if only I can find it. From all the reviews and sneak peeks that I've seen (and I have re-watched it many, many times), it looks like a fantastic movie.
